Spring Skorts

This week we are taking Spring Break. I'm not entirely convinced it is the best idea because there has been an enormous amount of bickering going on around here. It might be because of the time change though. That always throws young children off.

As you can see from the pictures, we have a lot of sun going on today so hopefully it can help us get rid of all the grumpiness. I noticed this weekend that we have tulips and daffodils coming up so Spring is definitely on its way.

fabric is from Anna Maria Horner's Chocolate Lollipop line

I made these skirts this weekend from Simplicity 4206. They were a lot of fun to make. If I decide to make more though, I should take the time to figure out my ruffler foot. I gathered these skirts the old-fashioned pulling-up-the-basting-thread way. It would go a lot faster if I took the time to learn about the ruffler foot. I found a free ruffler tutorial at YouCanMakeThis.com so I have no excuses except laziness and procrastination.

(On a completely unrelated note, I really dislike the name "Sewing Patterns for Dummies." I almost didn't buy the pattern because of that, but the skirts were so cute. It made me feel stupid to buy the pattern. I really wanted to explain to the clerk that I am not a dummy, but I decided to spare myself the inevitable eye-rolling from the clerk that would cause. I can explain all of this to you though 'cuz I can't see you rolling your eyes at me ☺)

I used the short pattern to turn the skirts into skorts. As you can see it was completely necessary to do this. ☺

I used an interlock knit fabric to make the shorts even though the pattern isn't for knits. It worked just fine.

First, I sewed the skirt except for finishing the elastic waist. Then, I sewed the complete shorts except for its elastic waist. I serged the two pieces together at the waist and turned them down together to make a casing for the waistband. It worked like a charm.

I bought t-shirts from Target and appliqued designs on them to match the skirts. It is hard to tell, but Pumpkin's shirt has a giraffe and Princess has a flower.

Because we are on Spring Break, I'm not entirely sure how much I will be able to blog this week. Hopefully I can pop in occasionally just to say hi if nothing else.
