This particular baby project was oh-so-very scary to me. I'll be honest, I would have never been brave enough to attempt it if we could have afforded any other option. But we couldn't.
Our infant seat has been through 4 previous children and the cover was in horrible shape. Yes it was ugly, but I could have lived with that if I had to, but it had also started tearing in places. That I could not live with.
We thought about buying a new infant seat, but they are actually fairly pricey. Totally shocked my husband☺ Because he had been without work for a year, we just don't have the money to spend on a lot of new baby equipment.
So he told me to go ahead and try to re-cover the car seat we have. I spent between $12-$15 (fabric was on sale ☺) and a couple of days figuring it all out. Completely worth it to us.
I completely took apart the existing cover and then just put the new fabric right over the top. So the car seat has the exact same padding that it had originally. I re-used everything that I could including the frame on the hood and the plastic hooks to attach the cover to the seat.
I should have labeled pieces well as I took them off. It all seemed so logical until all I had were strangely shaped pieces staring up at me and then I had no clue how it had come apart. So if you attempt this, a word of advice is label, label, label! Maybe even take pictures as you take it apart.
Disclaimer: I know the re-covering of infant seats is a bit of a controversial subject with strong opinions on both sides. If you are thinking of re-covering a car seat do your research about warranties and safety and make your own decision. Please don't leave any negative comments about our personal decision. Okay??? Thanks.
That is absolutely adorable! You did a wonderful job with it! Can't wait to meet your precious little bundle!
ReplyDeleteI think it looks AWESOME! I recovered our car seat (the big boy one) - with some cool construction fabric...
ReplyDelete...you did a super job with it!
Beautiful! This inspires me to tackle re-covering the seat of the high chair I bought second hand. I've been putting a blanket in it before lying V down (it reclines, so I'm able to use it for her, even though she's not to the solid food stage), but I really ought to re-do the cover - and I will label all the pieces as I take it apart!
ReplyDeletewow! cute, so impressed! I would never be able to do something like that...
ReplyDeleteIt looks fabulous. I can imagine having all of those different shaped pieces spread about. Yikes!
ReplyDeleteWay to face your fear! I think it looks incredible!
ReplyDeleteIt is gorgeous!
ReplyDeletewow what a brave move and it was so worth it. you could never find something to buy that is this cool!
ReplyDeleteThat looks great
ReplyDeleteWell done. I love the colors/fabrics you chose! Congrats on baby #5.
ReplyDeletewow!
ReplyDeletegreat job.
Wow, I love it!! It looks great!
ReplyDeleteThis looks amazing, and what a soft place for a baby to spend time. And I bet baby #5 will spend a lot of time in the car! :-)
ReplyDeleteI wish I could do it to mine. The car seat has been through 3 of my kids and then lent to a friend for one of his tripplets. Now that I am having my 4th baby we need it back. I just don't have the time to do that much work, so we will just end up using an extremely worn car seat.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks gorgeous! What a great way to recycle a piece of equipment!
ReplyDeleteI did this in May of 2010, but had to have a pattern. You were brave to tackle this! It turned out lovely.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see I'm not the only one that has considered this. I bought a car seat for cheap from a friend of the family, but it is for my boy and has gray/pink leopard print all over it. Can't wait to find a fun fabric for my little man. I would have never thought to do one fabric on the sides and a different one in the middle, but now I think I will take that approach!
